Etimología

Piranga: nombre Tupí, Tijepiranga -para un ave pequeña, desconocida.
flava: Latín, flavus -amarillo oro, de color dorado, amarillo.

Identificación

El macho es todo rojo anaranjado. La hembra posee dorsal amarillo oliváceo. Ventral amarilla. Alas y cola pardas con las plumas orilladas de amarillento.

- Tamaño: 17 cms.

- Peso: s/d

- Alimentación: insectos y arácnidos, y algunos frutos; se lo ha observado alimentarse también de nectar.

- Hábitat: capueras, bosques y sabanas.

- Reproducción: construye un nido con forma de taza sostenido en ramas de árboles, hecho con raicillas y recubierto externamente con líquenes e internamente cerdas. Pone 3 huevos de color azul verdoso con pintas y manchitas marrón rojizas.
