Etimología

Dryobates: Griego, druos -del bosque; bates -caminante, paseante.
scalaris: Latín, scalaris -escalera.

Estado de conservación


Identificación
Espalda negra barrada de blanco, vientre blanquecino con manchas negras, "bigote" negro enmarcado de blanco. El macho tiene rojo desde la nuca hasta mediado de la corona, donde se convierte manchado rojo, negro y blanco. La hembra tiene negro desde la nuca hasta la frente. Puede tener manchas blancas o rayas en la frente y la corona.
